MANILA - US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenney on Saturday donated $50,000 (P2.36 million) in immediate disaster relief assistance to the Philippine National Red Cross following the massive destruction wrought by tropical storm Ondoy.

Rebecca Thompson, the spokesman for the US Embassy in Manila, said the donation was coursed through the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance of USAID and coordinated with PNRC chairman Sen. Richard Gordon.

"The damage this storm has caused is heartbreaking... Embassy officials are in touch with [disaster] officials to determine what other assistance the US may offer," Thompson said in a statement.
