MANILA -- Twenty seven people drowned in Quezon City near San Mateo, Rizal after being swept away by a nearby river during the onslaught of Tropical Storm Ondoy. At least 80 others are also reported missing.

According to Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Station 6, 25 of the fatalities were from Barangay Bagong Silangan while the remaining 2 were from Vista Real in Barangay Batasan.

The QCPD said most of the fatalities were residents living in a creek near the San Mateo Road.

The victims were swept away when the river connected to the creek overflowed because of the storm.

The QCPD also reported that at least 950 families were already evacuated. The families are currently sheltered at the Bagong Silangan Elementary and High School and St. Peter’s Church.
