MANILA - At least 90,000 households or 1 percent of Manila Electric Company's (Meralco) franchise still has no power supply as of Thursday morning, five days after tropical storm Ondoy (international codename Ketsana) brought massive flooding in Metro Manila.

Meralco external communications head Joe R. Zaldarriaga said the remaining 1 percent of Meralco customers without power are in flooded areas such as Sta. Elena, Sto. Nino, San Roque and Malanday in Marikina; and Kalawaan, Sumilang and Malinao in Pasig.

"These are areas where the floods are still too high. We want to make sure that our facilities are not submerged. We can't turn on the power if the meters are still wet," he told radio dzMM.

He said a total of 1.2 million Meralco customers went without power last Saturday after the power distributor opted to shut down several substations at the height of the storm.

He also advised the public to check their electrical outlets and internal wiring in their houses and ensure that these are free of dirt and moisture.
