Makati approves permit for 'Million People March'
MANILA – The city government of Makati has approved the permit to rally for the Million People March on October 4, Makati Police chief Senior Superintendent Manuel Lukban said.
The rally, aimed at pressuring the government to fully abandon the pork barrel system, will take place in Ayala.
Peachy Rallonza Bretaña, one of the organizers of the event, said unlike the first Million People March in Luneta last August 26, there will be speakers this Friday.
"Magkakaroon ng stage, kasi magkakaroon ng speakers. Kailangan malaman ng tao: 'Ano ba ang definition ng pork barrel?'" Bretaña told dzMM.
Bretaña said people will not stop from holding similar protests in the future until the government is able to heed their call to abolish the pork barrel system and set up mechanisms that will promote transparency.
The government recently announced that it will abolish the pork barrel system and instead ask lawmakers to make projects proposals, eliminating the distribution lump sum budgets. This move did not pacify organizers like Bretaña.
"Pinapatikim lang tayo para mapatahimik. Akala nila mapapatahimik tayo eh. Hanggang ngayon, lalo pang lumalaki ang katiwalian na nakikita natin."
The assembly time will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The main program will be from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Bretaña is appealing to the people to join the rally to show the government that the people are not indifferent to the developments regarding the issue.
"Lahat po tayo dito ay apektado," she said. – with a report from Dennis Datu, dzMM
