Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Bayani Fernando on Monday said the agency will ban bazaars set up on streets, saying they hamper vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Fernando warned bazaar organizers and traders that the MMDA would be forced to confiscate or destroy their wares if they do not heed the order.

Fernando made the announcement as he and MMDA personnel toured several locations in Metro Manila that may be used as venues for bazaars.

He cited the Taft-Baclaran in Pasay City area as a major venue for bazaars and warned vendors not to utilize the streets as part of their stalls.

However, vendors said it would be better instead to let them use the streets to sell their wares during the Christmas shopping season.

Meanwhile, Fernando again touted his "Metro Gwapo 2010" plan to the media.

He said he will put up new tarpaulins that would bear slogans that would "change" the metropolis. He, however, said it is up to the people to turn this slogan into reality. With a report from Alex Santos, ABS-CBN News
