MANILA, Philippines – Almost 6,000 law graduates trooped to the University of Santo Tomas (UST) early Sunday morning to take the annual bar examinations.

A total of 5,686 law graduates will take the 2012 Bar examinations, which will be held on all four Sundays of October.

As early as 4 a.m., examinees were already at the UST campus, although gates opened at 5 a.m. The UST gates were closed at 7 a.m.

On the first day of exams, the law graduates will be tested on Political Law in the morning and on Labor and Social Legislation in the afternoon.

Security has been tightened around the perimeter of UST to prevent an incident similar to the 2010 Bar examinations at De La Salle University on Taft Avenue, Manila, wherein a blast injured several people.

Meanwhile, Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim has issued an executive order prohibiting the sale and distribution of beer and liquor along the UST perimeter for the four Sundays of October.

“No store, restaurant, eatery, cafe or any eating places or ambulant vendors shall be allowed to sell, peddle, or offer for drink to any person intoxicating beverages, such as :beer, liquors, wine and the like between the hours of 4:00 am and 8:00 pm within 200 meters from the perimeter walls of UST,” according to EO No. 32.

Deputy Clerk of Court and Bar Confidant Atty. Ma. Cristina B. Layusa said that of the total 5, 710 law graduates who petitioned to take the Bar exams, five were denied and 19 withdrew. -- Report from DZMM and Ina Reformina, ABS-CBN News
