Piston gears up for protest over 'excessive' fines
MANILA, Philippines – Transport group Piston is gearing up for various protests nationwide tomorrow against the supposedly excessive traffic fines set by the government.
Piston national president George San Mateo said the group is protesting the Department of Transportation and Communications' (DOTC) ignoring of a local court order stopping the implementation of Department Order No. 2008-38, which imposes the higher fines.
San Mateo said the order had been ordered stop last September 10 by the Baguio Regional Trial Court after it dismissed a motion for reconsideration by the DOTC.
Piston said the government should revert to the previous fines set by DOTC Dept. Order 936-93.
San Mateo said protest caravans will be held in Baguio City; Biñan, Laguna; Legazpi City, Albay; Davao; General Santos City; Bacolod; Dumaguete; Roxas City at Iloilo City.
He said tomorrow's action is just a prelude to a massive transportation strike.
Members of the transport group will head to the DOTC headquarters before going to to the Petro headquarters to protest high oil prices.
