1 dead, 3 hurt in Bilibid riot
MANILA – An inmate died after a riot involving two gangs erupted inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa on Tuesday evening.
NBP chief Superintendent Venancio Tesoro said the riot that occurred at around 11:30 p.m. inside Building 3 of the Maximum Security Compound was triggered by a misunderstanding over the coin game "Cara y Cruz."
The riot involved members of Sputnik and Happy Go Lucky gangs.
Tesoro said one of the inmates fired shots using an improvised shotgun and killed one of the inmates. Three others were seriously injured in the late night scuffle.
Jail officials have yet to determine how the weapon or the parts used to make it got inside the facility.
Tesoro said visitation privileges have been suspended due to the incident.
The NBP houses over 22,000 inmates and 13,213 of them are inside the Maximum Security Compound. The building where the riot occurred, meanwhile, houses at least 500 inmates. – report from Johnson Manabat, dzMM
