Manila official denies 'palakasan' in Iglesia event
MANILA - An official of the Manila city government denied Monday that the influential Iglesia ni Cristo religious sect was given special favors to conduct a medical mission in select areas in the city.
In a phone patch interview, Manila City Administrator Atty. Simeon Garcia said it was Mayor Joseph Estrada who gave the permit to the Iglesia ni Cristo to hold their rally in 5 areas.
Garcia said they respect the right of the INC to hold their activity in Manila since he believes the church only wants to help Manileños through their medical mission.
On the issue why they allowed it to be on a weekday where classes in schools has to be suspended due to the event, he said that they cannot dictate on INC on a specific date for their activity. He said that as long as an activity is for the good, it will be allowed.
