MANILA, Philippines – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) have started their preparations for the yearly exodus of Filipinos to the provinces during the All Saints' and All Souls' days.

LTO law enforcement division head Edgar Cabase said the agency began last Friday its inspection of the road-worthiness of provincial buses to ensure the safety of the large volume of passengers expected to leave Manila.

A higher volume of passengers are expected this year, with November 1 and 2, declared as special non-working holidays, falling on Thursday and Friday.

Drug testing for bus drivers is also underway, Cabase said.

Meanwhile, the LTFRB said it has started accepting applications for special permits for additional provincial buses.

LTFRB said the deadline of the application is on October 24. The special permits will be effective from October 25 until November 5.

It said it has so far approved 40 special permit applications.

The LTFRB also plans to deploy teams to various bus terminals to ensure that bus companies are not charging higher fares during the peak season. – report from Dennis Datu, dzMM
