Army officer tagged in Jonas Burgos abduction posts bail
MANILA – The Army officer tagged in the abduction of farmer-activist Jonas Burgos six years ago has posted bail on Friday morning, DZMM reported.
Army Major Harry Baliaga Jr., appeared at the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 216 with his legal counsel, Atty. Buwin Pasiwen at 8:30 a.m. to post a P40,000 bail for his temporary freedom.
Baliaga Jr., was identified by witnesses as among those who abducted Burgos on April 27, 2007 while he was inside a mall in Quezon City.
On September 11, 2013, the court issued a warrant of arrest against Baliaga Jr.
Judge Alfonso Ruiz set Baliaga's arraignment at 8 a.m. on November 12, 2013.
Last month, human rights group Karapatan criticized the Department of Justice for its resolution dropping high-ranking military officers from the list of respondents in the disappearance of Burgos.
According to Karapatan, the resolution released on September 3, 2013, drops from the respondents' list the names of Brig. Gen. Eduardo Año, Lt. Col. Melquiades Feliciano, Lt. Gen. Romeo Tolentino, Gen. Hermogenes Esperon, Lt. Gen. Alexander Yano and Dir. Gen. Avelino Razon Jr. on the criminal charges of arbitrary detention, murder and obstruction of justice filed by Dr. Edita Burgos on the abduction and disappearance of her son.
