'Santi' cancels Manila-bound flight from Japan

MANILA - An international flight from Narita, Japan to Manila and two domestic flights have been cancelled due to typhoon Santi (international codename Mirinae).

The Manila International Airport Authority said the Japan Airlines flight JL 745, which was supposed to leave Narita at 6:30 a.m. and land at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport at 10:30 p.m. has been cancelled due to the bad weather in the country.

Meanwhile, two domestic flights of the PAL Express (2P 063 and 2P064) bound for Manila to Virac and Virac to Manila have also been cancelled due to the typhoon.

The Philippine Coast Guard had earlier banned sea travel in areas placed under storm warning signals 2 and 3.

As of 1:30 p.m., the typhoon is located 240 kilometers east of Infanta, Quezon, packing maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 185 kph.

It was moving at a speed of 28 kph towards Quezon province. It is forecast to make landfall in Quezon on Friday evening.

Weather bureau PAGASA said it expects the typhoon to hit Metro Manila and nearby provinces of Rizal and Batangas.

Public storm signal No. 3 has been raised over Polillo Islands and the rest of Quezon province, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur and Catanduanes.

Signal No. 2 was hoisted over Aurora, Quirino, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Tarlac, Zambales, Pampanga, Bataan, Rizal, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Lubang Island, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Albay, Burias Island and Metro Manila.

The provinces of Isabela, Ifugao, Nueva Vizcaya, Benguet, La Union, Pangasinan, Sorsogon, Occidental Mindoro, Calamian Group and Northern Samar have been placed under signal No. 1.
