MANILA - Operations of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 1 resumed before noon Saturday after almost six hours of suspension due to power outages in Metro Manila.

LRTA administrator Mel Robles said the overheat trains system from Baclaran to Monumento has been restored.

Meanwhile, the operations of Metro Rail Transit from North Avenue to Shaw Boulevard has also resumed at 11:48 a.m.

The light rail systems' operations were affected by the power outages in Metro Manila due to typhoon Santi, which battered the metropolis with strong winds overnight.

Power provider Meralco on Saturday said at least 1.6 million registered customers experienced power outages during the typhoon's onslaught.

Meralco said in its statement that as of 10 a.m., the 1.6 million customers were still without power. It said the typhoon's strong winds was mainly the reason for the blackout.

Areas affected by the outages were portions Manila, Makati, Parañaque, Taguig, Quezon and Marikina were cut off around 6 a.m. The provinces of Laguna, Rizal, Quezon and Cavite also experienced outages during the tropical cyclone's onslaught.

"Felled trees, down poles and wires, damaged electrical equipment and other debris that hit our facilities were the reasons behind the outages,"  Meralco external communication manager Joe Zaldarriaga said in a statement.

Zaldarriaga said the company's workers have started restoring power in the affected areas.
