Thousands troop to cemeteries in MM
MANILA – As the weather cleared Sunday, thousands of Filipinos flocked to cemeteries to visit the graves of their departed loved ones as the country observes All Saints Day.
Superintendent Rommel Miranda, spokesman of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), told radio dzMM that about 450,000 people visited different cemeteries in Metro Manila Sunday morning.
The crowd estimate in Manila North Cemetery alone was at 300,000, according to Miranda. In Manila South Cemetery, on the other hand, police gave a crowd estimate of 25,000.
Manila North Cemetery and Manila South Cemetery are among the biggest memorial parks in the country.
Authorities also confiscated many bladed weapons, game cards and tear gas.
“May nakukumpiska tayong bladed weapons sa cemetery pero nabawasan na. From as high as 60 yesterday (Saturday), ngayon 29 na lang ‘yong nakukuha nating bladed weapons,” he said.
Miranda assured that the observance of All Saints Day in Metro Manila is “generally very peaceful.”
While there were no reported violent incidents yet, authorities recorded numerous complaints from people who could not find the graves of their loved ones. -With a report from Johnson Manabat, radio dzMM
