MANILA - Bicyclists and their folding bikes are the newest passengers of the Light Railway Transit (LRT) as the mass transport system management formally opened parts of its trains to people who prefer to pedal their way around the metropolis.
The new "Bike On, Bike Off" system - which will allow for up to 4 folding bikes to be accommodated in each train - was initiated as a means to help decongest the streets of vehicles and other traffic, as well as to reduce pollution.
The LRT Administration (LRTA) has designated a "green zone" at the last car of each train, where 4 folding bikes can be accommodated.
LRTA Administrator Mel Robles said that they have set the limit of 4 bikes per train at the moment because of lack of space in the trains.
The project is being implemented on LRT Lines I and II.
The inauguration of the project was led by Robles, Sen. Pia Cayetano, and members of cycling and environment groups Firefly Brigade, Tiklup Society, Padyak Movement, and the University of the Philippines (UP) Mountaineers.
The group rode the LRT II from the Cubao Station to Legarda Station. From the Legarda station, they bicycled their way to Rizal Park, as a celebration for the new project.
Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Joselito Atienza lauded the project, saying that it is a step towards lessening pollution in Metro Manila. With a report from Israel Malasa, ABS-CBN News
