MANILA – Help has continued to pour in from government and non-government organizations more than a month after tropical storms “Ondoy” (international code name Ketsana) and “Pepeng” (Parma) hit the country more than a month ago.

According to United States Ambassador Kristie Kenney, the US government has given $16 million worth of relief goods to areas hit by storms.

And they are willing to do more to help rebuild affected communities.

The US Embassy has been intensifying its rehabilitation efforts in storm affected areas. They are currently doing rehabilitative efforts in flooded schools in Marikina City.

Kenney participated in the US Embassy activity of painting damaged classrooms in Malanday National High School.

“It is a satisfying feeling to help the school,” remarked Kenney, adding, “and everybody wants to paint.”

The two-storey building of the Malanday National High School was submerged in floodwaters brought about by rains dumped by “Ondoy.” The school supplies and equipment were filled with filth and mud.

Malanday National High School assistant principal Josefino Lu, for his part, said: “We are trying to pick-up the pieces to get back to normal.”

Aside from painting the classrooms, the US Embassy will also donate books to the students. In these ways, they hope to help enhance the quality of education in affected areas like Marikina.

Evident damage

In Malanday National High School, the damage its facilities is still evident. Patches of mud still stick like glue inside the school’s walls.

Some 4th year high school students were seen rummaging through books that they can salvage inside the building.

They found a few of them with torn pages after the evacuees used them as bed sheets.

“Yung iba po pinagnanakaw kasi yung iba nawalan ng libro para pampalit sa nabahang libro... Ang iba ginamit na pamunas,” said student Dimple Susano.

Her fellow student Orlando Gamay stated: “Nahihirapan din po... nagtutulung-tulong na lang po kami.”
