MANILA – A Filipino is facing extradition to the United States after receiving items purchased by his wife using money she stole from her American employer six years ago.

The National Bureau of Investigation Interpol Division said Jonathan Enriquez is set to be extradited to face the charges for “receiving stolen property” in the US.

Atty. Claro de Castro Jr., chief of the NBI Interpol Division, said the US government requested for the arrest of Enriquez and his wife, Maribel. The request was sent to the Department of Justice (DOJ).

De Castro said only Enriquez was arrested since his wife had already left for the US.

Reports said Maribel worked as a nurse of an American national suffering from Parkinson’s disease in California.

It was learned that Maribel drugged her ward by increasing the patient's dosage of Ritalin, a brain stimulant. The Filipino nurse then brought the old man to his bank to withdraw about US$700,000 from his account.

“Allegedly ang ginawa ni Maribel, pinapirma niya ng tseke si Mr. (William Sr.) Murphy in the amount of US$700,000 and then ito ay in-encash sa bangko ni Mr. Murphy na kasama siya. Kaya daw ito nangyari sa pamamaraang binigyan ng gamot si Mr. Murphy parang to calm him down para sumunod siya sa utos ni Maribel,” explained De Castro.

Immediately after, Maribel took her ward to a car dealer and bought two Navigators and a Volvo which were supposed to be sent to the Philippines.

“It did not happen kasi hindi nadala dito sa Piliinas. At saka nagduda yung store owner kasi bakit bibili ka agad ng tatlong kotse and then babayaran mo agad ng cash at papadala sa Pilipinas. So nagduda na sila,” he said.

Maribel’s ward reportedly could not remember signing a check and withdrawing the money from the bank.

“Itong si Jonathan ay nakatanggap ng mga bagay na nanggaling sa transaksiyong ginawa ni Maribel kay Mr. Murphy…yung mga ninakaw doon ay nag-benefit siya,” he said.

The victim’s family discovered the incident and filed charges against the couple. Report from Maan Macapagal, ABS-CBN News
