Taxi driver nabbed for 'overcharging'
MANILA, Philippines – A taxi driver has been arrested for allegedly overcharging a visiting overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who had just arrived from Hong Kong.
The suspect, Jaime Naval, picked up his passenger, 38-year-old Mona Liza Dy, from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 at around 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
According to Dy's sworn statement, she was surprised that the cab “barker” who led her to the vehicle also rode inside the cab.
When they reached a Victory Liner bus terminal in Pasay, Dy said she was charged P1,200 by the two individuals.
Dy paid the amount, but went on to argue with the driver and the barker, prompting a security guard to approach them.
However, before the guard could even intervene, the cab sped off.
The guard chased the taxi using a private vehicle, and was able to apprehend the driver. The barker, however, escaped on foot.
At the police station, Naval insisted that he is also a victim of the "barker," whom he claims he doesn't know.
Naval said he didn't receive a single peso in the incident. He also claimed he thought Dy and the barker knew each other.
Pasay Police, meanwhile, continue to warn “balikbayans” of modus operandi involving taxis at the airport. -- Report from Niña Corpuz, ABS-CBN News
