MANILA - Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim said Thursday that he has ordered the police to place under surveillance the Islamic center in the city to prevent a possible spillover of violence from Maguindanao.

"To place under surveillance the Islamic Center where the Muslim community is residing so that we can detect if there is any unusual movement to prevent the occurrence of violence," Lim said

The mayor said the local police and the city government will not allow "violence to occur in Manila."

He said he has directed the Manila Police District to particularly be on the lookout of "new faces" and possible smuggling of arms in the Islamic community.

The order came as police and the military took control of three local government buildings in Maguindanao province to prevent violence during the surrender of Datu Unsay town Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr. to the authorities on Thursday morning.

Ampatuan Jr. is being tagged as the primary suspect in the massacre of 57 people in Ampatuan town on Monday.

Joint police and military teams have been deployed to the province to pursue at least 100 gunmen allegedly involved in the massacre. Police said they have information that the armed men were members of paramilitary troops in Maguindanao who are loyal to the Ampatuan clan.

Ampatuan Jr. was scheduled to be transported from General Santos City to Manila for inquest proceedings. With a report from Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News
