Pillbox explosions mar eviction in QC
MANILA, Philippines – Several pillbox explosions marred an eviction operation in Quezon City, Monday morning.
A report by dzMM’s Dexter Ganibe said 5 pillbox explosions were heard while police were asking several residents to leave their houses along BIR Road in Barangay Central.
Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Station 10 Col. Crisostomo Mendoza said the residents threw the pillbox explosives while negotiations were ongoing.
He also clarified that there was no demolition operation in the area, which has about 100 houses.
He explained they were going to ask only residents, who were already given houses at a relocation area in Montalban, Rizal, to leave the area.
“Wala namang demolition, nag-uusap ang magkabilang partido na yung mga nagbalikan dito na merong lupa at bahay at nagbalikan ay paalisin,” he told dzMM.
The explosion angered Mendoza, forcing him to order the arrest of those behind the explosion.
He said several militant groups have joined the residents and barricaded the entire road, causing heavy traffic.
“Hinagisan kami ng pillbox. Nag-uusap kami, pinapaayos yung nakaharang na barikada sa kalsada dahil nakaka-traffic,” he said.
Mendoza added the hostile informal settlers forced them to fire warning shots.
“Violation iyun. Nandito kami para mag-maintain ng peace and order. Hahagisan nila kami so dapat ipagtanggol namin yung sarili namin,” he stressed.
Big chunks of rocks were also thrown by the residents, leaving at least one, identified as Antonio Mariñas, injured.
Several residents and militant group members were apprehended by the police following the scuffle.
