MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police-Aviation Security Group (PNP-AVSEGROUP) on Wednesday conducted their yearly Full-Scale Counter Hijacking Exercise (Tactical Phase).

The exercise aims to determine the capacity, efficiency and effectiveness of their Special Operations Unit (SOU) in handling aircraft hijacking incident at any airport in the Philippines.

With PNP chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome in attendance, the SOU of the AVSEGROUP executed their operations against a group of terrorists simulating a hijacking incident.

According to Bartolome, the drill aims to improve the skills of their men for a more efficient and effective Tactical Team that can be used in any eventuality.

This is also the time to review proper steps, procedures and measures on how to manage aircraft hijacking in airports so that lives of passengers will be protected.

Bartolome added that there is also a need to provide their team with complete equipment, including bullet-proof vests.

Meanwhile, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) is satisfied with the marksmanship and capacity of the airport police force in thwarting possible hijacking scenarios.

MIAA General Manager Angel Honrado said he has high hopes that the PNP will ensure the safety of the riding public.

Christmas rush

Honrado added that security measures are now being mapped for the upcoming influx of passengers for the Christmas season.

There is no need to advise passengers to unwrap their Christmas gifts because security measures are in place.

He also warned MIAA personnel to avoid asking passengers for money while greeting arriving passengers.

"Hindi naman masamang bumati basta walang intensiyong hihingi ng pera,” Honrado said.
