To symbolize the Senate's commitment to renewable energy, Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri on Thursday unveiled a solar-powered Christmas lantern at the chamber's offices in Pasay City.
Sporting a bamboo frame and trimmed with regular Christmas light bulbs but with a solar panel in front, the “parol” was a gift from environment advocacy group Greenpeace International.
Zubiri said the “parol” is powered totally by solar energy absorbed from the sun, while the bamboo is recycled.
"Totally off the grid, it does not need electric (connection). It is not going to use fossil-fueled power. Or lights coming from Meralco," Zubiri said.
"The point here is we can get energy without using coal fired plants, bunker fuel plants." Lynda Jumilla, ABS-CBN News
