Suspect's arrest to strengthen case vs Dominguez brods

MANILA, Philippines -- Anti-crime crusaders said on Friday that the arrest of another suspect in the killing of car dealer Venson Evangelista could help strengthen the case against alleged masterminds Roger and Raymond Dominguez.

Joel Jacinto, who was arrested in his home in Las Piñas City Thursday, admitted his involvement in the murder of Evangelista, whose burned corpse was found in Cabanatuan City in Nueva Ecija in January 2011.

He said he was employed by the Dominguez brothers as their driver when they met with the victim.

Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) President Dante Jimenez told radio dzMM, "With the revelation now of Jacinto, then it will strengthen lalo 'yung case against Dominguez brothers and the carjacking syndicate."

"Dahil 'di ba napatay na ung witness natin na si Alfred (Mendiola), kaya very critical dahil alam mo naman ang mga magagaling na abogado will employ all tactics, technicalities kasi patay na nga si Alfred," he added.

Alfred Mendiola, a suspect turned witness in the murder of Evangelista, was found dead in Cavite last May.

Mendiola admitted having a hand in the crime by pretending as a buyer in the victims's shop. He also admitted to being a member of the Dominguez carnap group.

But almost two years after the killing, justice has yet to be served to Evangelista's family.

Jimenez attributed the slow pace of trial to the "rotten" justice system in the country.

"The system is talagang bulok. The system is really the problem," he said.

Free bail for indigent prisoners

The VACC president also scored a new bill allowing indigent prisoners to leave jail temporarily without posting bail.

House Bill No. 5395, sponsored by Sen. Francis Escudero, seeks to secure the temporary release of indigent prisoners who are unable to post bail because of lack of financial capacity.

Jimenez said the new measure will further deny the victims of due process and justice.

"Ide-deny na naman nito ang proseso kasi 'pag binigyan mo ng piyansa ay definitely siguradong tatagal na naman 'yang kaso, magtatago 'yan," he said.

"These are the things our lawmakers do not understand. Laging pro-criminals. 'Di nila naiintindihan 'yung nangyayari sa isang biktima. Dahil indigent ka, lusot ka na?" he asked.
