MANILA, Philippines – Five inmates allegedly involved in the grenade blast that rocked the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa last November have been charged with attempted murder.
The inmates were identified as Pablo Anora alias “Boyet”, Henry Villa alias “Jeffrey Bulusok”, Joseph Mostrales, Jerry Pepino, and Ronaldo Torres.
Villa allegedly hurled the grenade while the 4 others are gang leaders reportedly involved in a power struggle over control of illegal items inside the prison.
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) filed the complaint before the Muntinlupa City Prosecutors Office after its investigation showed that the incident is linked to an attempt to remove Batang City Jail commander Froilan Trestiza, who allegedly controls illegal activities in the national penitentiary.
“As a consequence thereof, they would be the ones who will control the illegal activities inside the New Bilibid Prison, like the illegal drugs and liquors trade and kidnapping of inmates' visitors,” NBI director Nonnatus Caesar Rojas said.
At least 6 inmates were injured in the November 16 incident, which also resulted in the replacement of several Bilibid officials.
