JV Ejercito: Politics behind arson claim in San Juan fire
MANILA, Philippines - San Juan Representative Joseph Victor "JV" Ejercito on Thursday said politics is behind the accusations that the city government had a hand in the fire in one of the city's shanties on Christmas day.
"It seems that the ones who spread the rumor of us ordering arson are the local political adversaries who took advantage of the opportunity, and some activist groups from other areas," Ejercito said on his Facebook account.
"It is indeed political season, some adversaries tried to tie this up in the national and City of Manila campaign. A dialogue with the residents is scheduled today," he added.
Some residents are accusing the city government of deliberately setting the residential area in Barangay St. Joseph on fire.
At least 500 homes were razed and some 2,000 families were rendered homeless.
Ejercito's mother, Guia Gomez, is the incumbent mayor of the city.
