Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay is urging motorists bound for Pasay City, Laguna, Cavite and other southern Luzon areas, who take the southbound portion of the Magallanes interchange, to expect heavy traffic or take alternate routes instead.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Tuesday recommended the partial closure of the southbound portion of the Magallanes interchange.
Binay said only light vehicles are allowed to use one lane of the Magallanes bridge going to Pasay.
Engineers from the DPWH inspected the structure after the Makati Traffic Bureau reported cracks and misalignment on the left portion of the interchange at 11 am Tuesday.
The engineers said joints have been misaligned.
Binay asked the DPWH to undertake needed repairs before the two-week holiday break ends on January 5.
"We have to act on this immediately since we expect thousands of vehicles to use the Magallanes flyover starting January 5," he said in a press statement.
Heavy traffic momentarily built-up Tuesday for a couple of hours after police partially closed the left southbound lane of the Magallanes bridge after discovering cracks & other structural defects.
On Monday night, a Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) met an accident when his motorcycle fell into one of the holes on the interchange.
MMDA officers said the cracks and the hole have been there for a long time, causing numerous accidents. -- with a report from Joey Villarama, ABS-CBN News
