Quezon province jueteng-free, says Suarez
MANILA, Philippines -- The Quezon province is jueteng-free, House Minority Leader and Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez insisted Wednesday.
He said there are no illegal gambling operations in the province. This, after the alleged shootout in Atimonan was linked to the illegal numbers game jueteng.
Thirteen people were killed in the shooting incident, including three policemen and a soldier.
The shootout also raised alarms on the state of gun ownership and control in the country, Suarez said.
He said he agrees that there is a need to review the government's policies on gun ownership.
He said he also pushes for stricter screening of gun ownership applications.
The congressman, however, said he does not support calls for a total gun ban in the country.
Suarez said police should instead step up its work against the use of illegal drugs, which is also being seen as the reason behind another shooting incident in Kawit, Cavite last week.
The Kawit shooting incident left eight people dead, including the gunman, and 10 others injured. -- Report from Johnson Manabat, dzMM
