MANILA—Nine members of the New People's Army (NPA) surrendered to military in South Cotabato and Davao del Sur on Friday.

Capt. Aberto Caber, spokesman of the military’s Eastern Mindanao Command based in Davao City, said the returnees admitted that living the life of a rebel is difficult.

Caber added that leaders of the NPA also failed in their promises of giving them a better life.

"False promises of their leaders as well as frustrations in the actual practices inside the NPA (forced) them to return to the folds of the law," Caber said.

Six of the rebels, identified as Rudy Sawang, John Tomo, Lemuel Nalon, Anita Dalugan, Luna Kaong, and Dina Daludo, surrendered to the Peace and Development Team of the Army's 27th Infantry Battalion in Lake Sebu in South Cotabato last Friday afternoon.

Cabales said all of them were in charge of recruitment and training of new NPA fighters in the province.

The three other rebels—Charlie Pasco, alias Long Hair; Jeffrey Pasco, alias Balbal; and Guiller Ombaoy, alias Ritchen—surrendered to the Army's 39th Infantry Battalion in Bansalan town in Davao del Sur last Friday morning.

Cabales said they are members of the Front Committee 51 which operates in Davao del Sur and North Cotabato.

The three surrendered an M14 rifle and two M16 rifles.
