NEGROS OCCIDENTAL – Lighted candles left unattended were blamed for causing separate fires in the cities of San Carlos and Bacolod Monday.
In San Carlos City, 63-year old Lope Canoy burned to death after his hut was gutted by a fire 6 p.m., Monday while he was inside fast asleep.
Alicia Canoy, daughter of the victim, said that Lope used to light a candle before he sleeps.
"Maybe the candle fell down and caught combustible materials inside the hut which later caused the fire," she said.
The victim reportedly lived alone in the hut which was beside the house of one of his three children.
"He was probably drunk before he came to rest and maybe, when the fire broke out, he failed to ran outside of the house for safety," the victim's daughter added.

In Bacolod City meanwhile, almost P200,000 worth of appliances inside the house of Modesto David burned down after a fire broke out 4 a.m. Tuesday.
The incident was similarly blamed over an unattended lighted candle that was reportedly placed at the top of the cabinet of the room of David's younger brother.
No one was injured during the second incident.
