Zambo village residents worry about soil erosion
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines - Residents of a village in Victoria, Zamboanga City, are worrying over the soil erosion in their area.
It is occurring after a highway eroded several years ago, said resident Mamerto Sarmiento.
A steel bridge is currently being built in the area.
Pond water seeped into the concrete highway, destroying it in 2008.
Sarmiento said a neighbor's house had to be abandoned after it slowly collapsed.
The highway has even been reduced to a single lane after rocky slope protection structures eroded due to heavy rains.
The local government unit acknowledged the soil erosion in the village.
Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat said he asked the Department of Public Works and Highways and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau to study and explain why the erosion
continued despite the rehabilitation efforts conducted on the collapsed highway.
Sarmiento believes that the erosion is slowly resulting into a gradual landslide, which may destroy more houses.
The local government is considering the lack of a drainage system in the area as the cause behind the soil erosion.
