Magnitude 5.5 quake hits Eastern Samar

MANILA, Philippines – A magnitude 5.5 earthquake shook Eastern Samar on Saturday night.

The quake took place at 9:48 p.m., according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

PHIVOLCS located the center of the earthquake 15 kilometers southwest of Balangkayan, Eastern Samar.

It was felt at Intensity 5 in Borongan and Llorente in Eastern Samar; Intensity 4 in Tacloban City and Palo in Leyte and Basey, Western Samar; Intensity 3 in Abuyog, Leyte; Intensity 2 in St. Bernard, Sourthern Leyte; and Intensity 1 in Surigao City.

The earthquake of tectonic origin was 51 kilometers deep.

There were no reports of any casualty or damages, as of posting time, although Phivolcs warned of aftershocks.
