Signal no. 1 still up in 6 areas as 'Agaton' lingers
MANILA – Public storm warning signal number 1 remains hoisted in six areas in Mindanao due to tropical depression "Agaton."
In its latest weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said signal no. 1 remains up over Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur and Compostella Valley.
As of 4 a.m., Agaton was located 230 kilometers southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur as of 4 a.m. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center.
The tropical depression is forecast to move west southwest at 5 kph. At this rate, Agaton is expected to be 140 kms southeast of Davao City or 185 kms southeast of General Santos City by Tuesday morning; and 60 kms east of General Santos City by Wednesday morning.
An estimated rainfall of amount of 5 - 15 millimeters per hour (moderate - heavy) is expected within Agaton's 300-km diameter.
Due to Agaton, Davao Region and the provinces of Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur will have rains with gusty winds.
Northern Mindanao and the rest of Caraga will experience cloudy skies with moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms which may trigger flash floods and landslides.
Visayas and the rest of Mindanao will be cloudy with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms.
Cagayan Valley, Bicol Region and Palawan will have cloudy skies with light rains. Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated light rains.
Agaton has already claimed 40 lives and left at least 6 missing, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
