MANILA, Philippines -- A Belgian student died after jumping off a school building in Bacolod City Tuesday afternoon.

Matthew Guerts, 19, allegedly jumped off the 5th floor of La Consolacion College (LCC)-Bacolod.

Initial investigation of the Bacolod City Police showed that the student committed suicide.

Chief Insp. Danilo Francisco said Guerts went up to the rooftop of the building then jumped off, leading to his death.

One student who saw Guerts tried to persuade him to go down, noting that the area was off limits, but Guerts did not listen.

Authorities recovered a letter believed to be a suicide note from the victim.

However, they would still have to get an interpreter since the letter was written in French.

The management of LCC, meanwhile, declined to give a statement on the incident.

Guerts had been a cross-enrollee at LCC for 11 months. He was a 2nd year Digital Media Arts and Communication exchange student from the University of Saint La Salle. -- Report from Yasmin Dormido, dzMM
