MANILA, Philippines  - Today marks the first death anniversary of environmentalist and broadcaster Dr. Gerry Ortega who was gunned down in Puerto Princesa City.

To commemorate Ortega's death anniversary, the Kalikasan People's Network for the Environment(Kalikasan PNE) staged a picket at the Department of Justice(DOJ) where a reinvestigation into the brutal killing is ongoing.

The group called on the DOJ to fast track the resolution of the complaint filed by Ortega's widow, Patria, against former Palawan Governor Joel Reyes, former Marinduque Governor Jose Carreon, and eight (8) others.

Kalikasan PNE also protested the Aquino administration's "continuing indifference on the killing of Dr. Ortega and human rights violations among environmental defenders in general."

Kalikasan PNE said the administration should not just focus all its resources into prosecuting Chief Justice Renato Corona via his impeachment trial.

"The Aquino government should exert an effort equal to their prosecution of Corona in bringing [to] justice the perpetrators of killings and other human rights violations on environmental advocates such as Dr. Gerry Ortega. One year after Ortega's assassination, the Department of Justice's hearings gas persisted on a dawdling pace despite damning evidence on the accused mastermind, former Palawan Gov. Joel Reyes," Kalikasan PNE national coordinator Clemente Bautista said, in an official statement.

"It is the height of hypocrisy when Pres. Aquino is pushing for the conviction of Corona when Aquino's court, particularly the DOJ, has presently failed to stop the spate of killings of environmentalists under his term. Not one among the perpetrators of these killings has been put to justice," she added.

Kalikasan Party List, meantime, criticized Pres. Aquino's "growing track record of crimes against environmental defenders."

The group claimed 51 human rights violations on environmental advocates were recorded since 2001, including Ortega and 9 others under the present administration. These, have yet to be resolved, the party list claimed.

"Even legislative support through House Resolution 863 that aimed to investigate the killing of Ortega filed by Bayan Muna representatives Teddy Casino and Neri Colmenares has hit a wall long ago. The family of Dr. Ortega and various people's organizations have exhausted numerous legal means and procedures to pursue justice for Ortega but have gone nowhere in the face of the ever growing culture of impunity under the Aquino government," said Leon Dulce, Kalikasan Party List convenor.

"How many more Gerry Ortegas do we need until the systemic human rights violations on environmental advocates abates?" she added.

In a text message to ABS-CBN News, Ortega's daughter, Mika said: "Today is dad's 1st year death anniversary. It was 10:42am exactly a year ago when he was shot. Today we pray. Today we remember."

Ortega also called on her father's supporters to wear black today.

Dr. Ortega was project director of ABS-CBN's Bantay Kalikasan-Palawan.
