9 killed in Negros Occidental ambush
MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE 1) Nine people were killed while at least two others were injured in an ambush in Barangay Puso, La Castellana, Negros Occidental early Sunday morning.
Police said the victims were riding a Canter truck on their way home from a fiesta when they were attacked by around 20 to 30 armed men at around 3 a.m.
Among those killed were PO1 Richard Tamba, five barangay tanods, two civilians and the truck driver.
Two policemen and some civilians were also wounded and brought to a local hospital.
Police believe that the suspects were members of the New People's Army (NPA) after one shooter reportedly shouted "Mabuhay ang NPA" during the incident.
Members of the Philippine National Police are already in the area to investigate the incident, while the Philippine Army has already deployed a number of troops to the area to conduct a follow-up operation and pursue the suspects. -- Reports from DZMM and Marty Go, ABS-CBN News Negros Occidental
