79 turtle hatchlings saved in Nasugbu
The World Wildlife Foundation saved 79 sea turtle hatchlings in Pico de Loro resort in Nasugbu, Batangas earlier this week. The sea turtles, otherwise known as pawikans, were discovered by a security guard as he was doing his rounds at the Beach Club of the exclusive resort.
Paolo Pagaduan, project manager of World Wildlife Foundation, positively identified the sea turtles as belonging to the Olive Ridley species - a name derived from its color and the name of the person who discovered it.
"This is the third set of hatchlings we've discovered in the resort since we started monitoring it in 2007 and this is the biggest group so far," Pagaduan said.
The hatchlings were released Monday 15 meters from the shore.
According to Pagaduan, residents are prohibited to keep the sea turtles so they have been working with the developers of the resort to ensure its conservation as studies show that only 1 to 10 percent of the hatchlings found will eventually survive.
