Strong quake jolts Samar
MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) – A strong earthquake hit the province of Samar Saturday night.
The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 6 quake occurred at 9:09 p.m.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), meanwhile, said the quake was recorded at a magnitude of 5.9.
Phivolcs said the earthquake was felt in the southeastern part of San Policarpio, Eastern Samar.
Intensity 4 was felt in Gamay, Northern Samar.
Other areas in the province felt an intensity 3 quake, particularly in Palo, Leyte; Tacloban; San Policarpo, Eastern Samar; Dolosa, Leyte; Catbalogan, Samar; and Oras, Samar.
Phivolcs said a magnitude 5 earthquake then hit at 9:19 p.m. Intensity 3 was felt in Borongan, Eastern Samar.
A few minutes later, a 4.2 quake again hit the area. Intensity 2 was felt in Borongan.
At 9:46 p.m., Phivolcs said a 4.3 quake struck again. A 3.7 quake then occurred at 10:48 p.m. also in the vicinity of San Policarpio.
The quakes were all tectonic in origin.
No damages or casualties were reported as of posting.
Last Wednesday, Phivolcs said a series of quakes were also felt in Eastern Samar.
