MANILA, Philippines – A soldier got killed after the 26th Infantry Battalion had a clash with seven armed men early Sunday morning in Barangay Magkalape, Sibagat, Agusan del Sur.

The soldiers were conducting a combat operation following a complaint they received from the civilians.

The civilians said the armed men were allegedly carrying out extortions supposedly for the victims of tropical storm Sendong.

The casualty was identified as Staff Sergeant Gomersindo Babanto, who sustained a wound in his chest.

Babanto’s remains are currently in Butuan City.
