ILOILO -- The Iloilo Provincial Health Office has expressed alarm over the rise in the number of dengue cases recorded last month compared to January 2012.
From January to February 2 this year, the province recorded 160 dengue cases with two casualties.
The town of Banate had the most number of dengue patients with 47 cases and one death.
The figure is up by 281% compared to the 42 cases recorded during the same period last year.
Residents' lack of knowledge about dengue is considered as one of the reasons why the figure is increasing.
Health experts advised the public to always maintain their surroundings clean and destroy breeding places of mosquitoes.
They said residents should also immediately consult the doctor once they see any symptoms of dengue.
The local government said consultation and other hospital expenses are free for dengue patients.
