Barangays urged to be disaster-ready
MANILA, Philippines – Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo on Thursday urged barangay leaders nationwide to conduct disaster awareness and response campaigns in their communities to be better prepared for calamities.
In a speech during the 2nd general assembly and National Executive Board meeting of the Liga ng mga Barangay, Robredo said barangay chairmen should always be ready with their disaster risk reduction and management plans, including evacuation plans.
"Sa aspetong ito, malaki ang maitutulong ng mga barangay dahil sila ang nasa ibaba at sentro ng komunidad, at higit na nakakaalam kung saang lugar sa kanilang barangay ang madalas bahain pati na ang mga landslide-prone area," he said.
Robredo called on barangays to follow disaster protocols, install early warning systems, and conduct drills and exercises.
He also pushed for the formation of rescue teams to provide immediate assistance to residents.
He added that barangay officials should keep communication lines open to ensure immediate assistance.
