Passengers safe after relief boat stalls in Negros
MANILA, Philippines – A pumpboat carrying relief goods for earthquake victims in Negros Oriental province was stalled in Tanyon Strait Saturday afternoon after it encountered big waves.
According to Lt. Commander Agapito Bibat of the Philippine Coast Guard station in Dumaguete, the boat’s outrigger was damaged while heading to La Libertad town at around 3 p.m.
The boat was carrying 100 sacks of rice, water and other relief items for the victims of the 6.9-magnitude quake that hit the Negros-Cebu region last Monday.
Volunteers from the Philippine Red Cross were onboard.
Two fishing boats rescued the pumpboat and it was safely dragged ashore in La Libertad at around 4 p.m.
All passengers are safe, according to the coast guard.
The Philippine Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.
