Suspected meningococcemia case reported in Cebu
CEBU - Residents of a mountain barangay in Cebu City are alarmed after a 1 year-old-baby girl who died Sunday afternoon was reportedly diagnosed with meningococcemia.
The patient, reports said, was rushed to a private hospital Saturday. The diagnosis revealed that the patient suffered from high fever and had rashes in parts of her body.
However, no confirmatory test was conducted to find out if the bacteria which infected the patient was indeed meningococcus. The Department of Health in Central Visayas (DOH-7) has taken steps to prevent the spread of the disease, which is characterized as contagious.
Antibiotics were given to the barangay health center for distribution. No other resident has complained of sickness related to the symptoms of meningococcemia.
DOH-7 has also reminded the public to take steps to strengthen their immune system and for mothers to practice breastfeeding to protect their babies from sickness.
