MANILA, Philippines - A businessman and his bodyguard were biking in Famy, Laguna when they were shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Sunday morning.

Juan Gatdula Jr. and his bodyguard, identified as Timoteo Maalala, were shot several times by two motorcycle-riding gunmen along Manila East Service Road. The motive of the crime is still unknown.

Witness Rodel Lamenero said he was walking along the same road when he heard the gunshots. He immediately saw the victims lying on the road.

"Naglalakad ako galing sa amin, pagka-lagpas ko may pumutok, bumalik ako ngayon. Tapos nakita ko na may nakatumba rito. Dalawa nakabulagta. Ang tumira diyan nakamotor," Lamenero said.

According to Famy Municipal Acting Chief of Police Senior Inspector Gerry Sangalang, Gatdula regularly rides his bike along the Manila East Service Road.

"Sa tingin ko ay nasundan nila ang bikitma galing pa sa Sta. Maria. The incident may be a well-planned operation," Sangalang said.

The police recovered seven empty shells of a caliber 45 at the crime scene.

Sangalang has created Task Force Gatdula to investigate the ambush. He also encouraged civilians to help in the investigation by providing pertinent information about the incident.

"We are seeking the assistance of the Chief of Police of Laguna to assist us with the investigation. Humihingi din po kami ng tulong sa mga civilian sapagkat yung tulong ng mamayan ay yun po ang aming magiging gabay para maresolba ang kasong ito," he said.
