Guihulngan quake victims queue for relief goods
NEGROS ORIENTAL, Philippines – When the Philippine Red Cross distributed relief goods in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental on Tuesday, residents ran and rushed to line up.
Some who were already able to get goods did not want to leave and tried to get more.
“Maghintay pa kami dito. Mamaya na lang hapon kami uuwi,” said Josie Balanza.
The relief packs were supposed to be enough for everyone but others complained that they weren't able to receive any.
“Maaga [pa kami naandito], alas-6 pa kami ng umaga,” said Grace Nacion.
In another barangay, relief operations were orderly.
Recipients' names were on a list and they were called one by one to get their share.
The Red Cross said this should've been the process in the barangay they previously visited.
“Magulo doon dahil pabalik-balik ang tao eh. Pag-nakakuha na sila ng relief goods, papapila ulit sila at kukuha ulit ng sticker, nagkakagulo,” said Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri, governor of Philippine Red Cross.
Many residents also gathered outside the house of Guihulngan Mayor Ernesto Reyes.
“Manghihingi kami ng bigas. Sabi, magbibigay sila ng bigas,” said one of the residents.
However, the relief goods are only being re-packed in the mayor's home.
“Ganoon ‘yan pag-mayor ka eh. Actually nandito na ‘yan kahapon, pag-sinabi mong wala, ako pupunta diyan, syempre magmumura ‘yan. Magagalit na naman,” said Reyes.
Reyes clarified that the goods are for all barangays and not just those in his neighborhood.
“Parang election, na marking dito, nilagay natin ‘yung indelible ink, ‘yun. Pero tinatanggal pa din. Marunong, may paraan sila. Binubura nila, pagkatapos pila naman ulit,” he said.
Police were eventually able to convince the mayor's neighbors to leave. -- ANC
