MANILA, Philippines – At least 569 residents in Agusan del Norte and Lanao del Norte fled their homes due to threats of flooding, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Thursday.

The NDRRMC said the Lapayan River overflowed at around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, triggering the evacuation of 96 families or 429 individuals in Barangays Kawit Oriental, Lapayan, Tugar, Tacub and Libertad in Kauswagan town, Lanao del Norte.

Floods also damaged 2 houses in Tugar, and one in Kawit Oriental. The evacuees sought temporary shelter in Kauswagan Gym; an Adventist Church in Tagum; and an auditorium in Libertad.

In Jabonga, Agusan del Norte, 28 families or 140 individuals fled their homes after the water level in Lake Mainit was reported to be rising..

Eighty individuals temporarily stayed in a municipal gym in Barangay Polacion, and 60 in Bonga Elementary School.

Heavy rains also rendered a highway from Kauswagan to Bacolod town impassable for about 4 hours. The road became passable at around 7:30 p.m.

Rains are expected to occur in Mindanao, Visayas and Bicol region in the coming days as a low pressure area (LPA) nears land.

In its latest weather bulletin, PAGASA said it last spotted the LPA 100 kilometers of east southern Mindanao.

Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms. The rest of Luzon, meanwhile, will be mostly cloudy with light rains.
