MANILA, Philippines – Tropical depression "Crising" is now over Sulu Sea and may merge with another potential cyclone spotted off Palawan, state weather bureau PAGASA said on Wednesday.

PAGASA forecaster Buddy Javier said a low pressure area (LPA) spotted 220 kilometers northwest of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan may merge with Crising.

"Posibleng ganoon ang magiging scenario, magme-merge sila dahil halos magkalapit sila, at kung sino ang mas malakas yun ang magiging dominante sa kanila," Javier told dzMM.

Crising was located 140 kms northwest of Zamboanga City as of 4 a.m. It was still packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph).

The tropical depression has also maintained its west northwest movement at 24 kph. An estimated rainfall of 5 - 15 mm per hour (moderate - heavy) is expected within Crising's 300-km diameter.

Public storm warning signal no.1 remains hoisted over Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Basilan, Sulu and Southern Palawan.

Crising made landfall in Davao del Sur on Tuesday afternoon, prompting residents in the Mindanao region to flee to higher grounds.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said at least 3,568 residents have sought refuge in evacuation centers.

Francisco Digaynon, a resident of New Bataan, Compostela Valley, is the lone fatality so far reported. He drowned while crossing Taytayan river.

Four people, meanwhile, were injured.

PAGASA said due to the combined effects of Crising and the LPA, southern Palawan, Zamboanga Peninsula and the provinces of Basilan and Sulu will experience rains and gusty winds with moderate to rough seas.

Bicol region, Visayas and the rest of Palawan and Mindanao will have cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

The provinces of Mindoro, Marinduque and Romblon will be cloudy with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms. Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have partly cloudy skies with isolated rains or thunderstorms.
