Kidnap victim released in Sulu
MANILA, Philippines [UPDATED] -- A kidnap victim was released in Jolo, Sulu Friday morning, police said.
Police Supt. Edwin de Ocampo, officer-in-charge of Zamboanga Police, said businessman Edgar Fabella was released past 10 a.m Friday. He arrived in Zamboanga City Saturday morning.
De Ocampo earlier denied ransom was paid for the victim's release.
However, in a press briefing this morning, Zamboanga Mayor Celso Lobregat confirmed that the victim's family paid the kidnappers a small amount of money for the release of Fabella.
Police said Fabella's physical condition is good but he lost some weight after over six weeks of captivity.
Fabella was abducted by suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf Group inside his grocery store in Barangay Maasin, Zamboanga City last January 11.
Meanwhile, the bandit group still holds six foreign hostages including Jordanian journalist Baker Atyani. -- Reports from RJ Rosalado and Leizel Lacastesantos, ABS-CBN News Zamboanga; With ANC
