Pregnant bride-to-be killed in Pangasinan mishap
MANILA, Philippines – The family of Mary Joy Gutlay, one of the 4 victims who died in a road accident in Pangasinan on Friday, is still shocked over the tragic incident.
Gutlay, who was 2 months pregnant, was one of the victims who were killed after a wayward 10-wheeler truck crashed into 9 other vehicles in a highway in Rosales town.
“Sabi ko nga huwag na siya maglalalabas dahil buntis siya,” said Gutlay’s father Benjamin.
Gutlay was also set to get married this year to her boyfriend Romar Scott.
“Bago siya ilibing, ikakasal kami,” said Scott.
Gutlay’s brother Benjie said he happened to pass by the wreckage but did not realize that her sister was involved in the mishap.
"Nadaanan ko, tapos sabi ko, ‘Patay ‘yung tao dito kawawa naman.’ Hindi ko ine-expect na kapatid ko pala ‘yun,” he said.
Police investigations showed that the vegetable truck being driven by Alex Cuenco lost its brakes. Cuenco’s truck hit 3 dump trucks, 3 tricycles, 2 motorcycles and a parked owner-type jeep.
“Humihingi ako ng paumanhin sa mga kamaganak ng mga namatayan,” the driver said.
He is now in police custody and may face charges of reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide.
Authorities said 5 injured victims, 2 of whom are in critical condition, are still confined in a hospital.
Eight others have been discharged. -- Report from Nica Tomines, ABS-CBN Pangasinan
