Fiancé of slain Dutch urges DOJ to file murder raps
MANILA - The fiancé of slain Dutch NGO worker Wilhelm Geertman has asked the Department of Justice (DOJ) to file murder charges against 2 suspects slapped only with robbery with homicide charges for Geertman' death in July of last year.
Ma. Aurora Agustin Santiago, assisted by the National Union of People's Lawyers (NUPL), filed a petition for review with the department. Santiago insists that 67-year old Geertman was a victim of extra-judicial killing.
Santiago believes that Harold Dela Cruz, Marvin Marsan and several 'Jane' and 'John Does' should be slapped with murder and robbery instead of the mere complex crime of robbery with homicide.
In her petition, Santiago pointed out that the investigating state prosecutor who recommended the indictment of Dela Cruz, et al for the present criminal case "failed to appreciate the facts and the evidence that the main purpose of the perpetrator was to assassinate Geertman and not to rob him."
"[T]he perpetrators went into the trouble of making him (Geertman) ignominously kneel down thereby costing them several minutes before they were able to carry out their alleged plan," the petition read.
Geertman lived in the Philippines for 30 years doing development work. He was shot in his office in a subdivision in Angeles City.
A small group staged a picket in front of the DOJ to support Santiago.
