BATANGAS - All trips originating from the port of Batangas were canceled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, stranding 200 passengers and 30 vessels bound for Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro and Calapan, Oriental Mindoro.

According to Coastguard Batangas Station Commander Troy Cornelio, roll-on/roll-off (RORO) and fast craft vessels were prohibited from sailing as the country braced for outsized waves.

“The tsunami is expected to hit Quezon between 1:30 to 3:30 this afternoon so trips will resume at around 5 p.m.,” said Cornelio.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the Tsunami Alert Level to 2 on Sunday morning despite the cancelation of the tsunami warning around the Pacific Ocean.

It advised residents in coastal areas in Batanes Group of Islands, Cagayan, northernmost provinces of Ilocos Norte, Isabela, Quezon, Aurora, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Davao Oriental and Davao del Sur to seek higher ground.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center based in Hawaii earlier canceled the tsunami warning except for Japan and Russia.

The tsunami, which was triggered by the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Chile on Saturday, already passed by other areas such as New Zealand, Australia and Hawaii.

Exaggerated

Parang exaggerated response naman. Di ba nasa other side ng archipelago ang Batangas? The tsunami would have to cross the entire east coast or find its way through San Bernardino strait to reach Batangas. Di naman ata ganun katalino ang Tsunami para hanapin Batangas. Haha.

I love abs-cbnnews.com! Can't end the day without visiting it.
